The Newmark building was designed by Skidmore Owens and Merrill in 1991 as one of the nation’s pioneering urban mixed-use developments, a retail mall attached to an apartment tower. In 1993, HAL purchased the property in partnership with Intracorp and proceeded to convert the 191 residential apartments to condominiums, which were sold by the end of the following year. In 1998, HAL acquired Intracorp's interest in the retail mall and converted it to office and retail space.

Pike Plaza occupies the east half block bounded by Pike, Second and Union, which places it at the axis of the state’s top tourist attraction, the Pike Place Market (First & Pike), and the city’s retail core (Fifth-Sixth & Pike-Pine). Since HAL acquired Pike Plaza, downtown Seattle has grown to become one of the nation’s few 24-hour downtowns and now boasts a large and growing residential population. This highly central and amenity rich location has resulted in Pike Plaza benefiting from a perfect Walkscore of 100. The area surrounding Pike Plaza has evolved to include the Seattle Art Museum, the internationally renowned Benaroya Symphony Hall and the Four Season’s Hotel and Residences, as well as some of the top restaurants and most expensive condominium towers in the region. Additionally, early 2009 marked the opening of the first line of Seattle’s new light rail system. The first line extends from downtown to the airport, via the Rainier Valley. Eventually the entire light rail system will extend south to Federal Way, north to Northgate Mall and east across Mercer Island, through downtown Bellevue and to the Microsoft Campus in Redmond. Pike Plaza is located one block from the University Street light rail station, making it extremely convenient to this new transportation system.

Pike Plaza consists of 103,442 square feet of office and retail space, and a 250 stall parking garage. The property was sold in July 2010.
