Shorewood Apartments were completed in 1949, in the then largely undeveloped community of Mercer Island. The Shorewood buildings were developed in a variety of traditional architectural styles, but had a commonality in terms of appearance. The unit interiors feature beautifully tiled bathrooms, oak floors, crown and base molding, and spacious floor plans. The apartments are located within 40 buildings designed as a residential neighborhood in a beautifully landscaped 45-acre setting overlooking Lake Washington.

HAL acquired Shorewood in February of 1998. In November of 2001, HAL completed a three-year project to carefully restore the buildings and the 568 apartment homes paying particular attention to preserving the historic character of the units. While doing so, new features were added including washers and dryers, dishwashers, new energy efficient windows, upgraded electrical systems, upgraded plumbing systems, upgraded heating systems, CAT 6 wire, and LAN capability within each apartment home.

In February of 2002, two new buildings, comprising 78 units, were built on the property. Both the building exteriors and the unit interiors closely resemble the historic buildings, but offer new features including fireplaces, private balconies and decks, elevator access, and secure underground parking. An activity center, named the Pavilion, was also added to the property. The Pavilion features a 24-hour fitness facility, business center, lounge, chef’s display kitchen, and clubroom. The property was sold in December 2005.
